Children played with driftwood puppets that moved like drowned sailors; dogs chased the smells of memories. Fearless kept her head down, Cheat Engine singing softly beneath her sleeve. The repack glued old magic to new needs—its ports tolerated salt, its valves prevented the Wuthering from smelling their intrusion.

At the marsh edge, the first true test: a ripple in the air, not waves but syntax. The repack had sealing stitches, but its seams were not invulnerable. Fearless thought of the cliff terraces and of children's mouths open for bread. She thought of the harbormaster’s eyes, and the way the old mapmaker folded her hands like a closed letter. She made the choice that the sea had taught her long ago: the tide takes what it needs, but so can she.

The harbormaster let out a long breath. "Memory is the only real map," she murmured. "Chart it carefully."
